AVI Files

I just installed Vegas 6b on a new laptop (I allredy have it installed in a desktop), Vegas on the laptop doesn't see AVI files in it's Explorer. I have to open Windows Explorer in order to drag the AVI files into the timeline. I also registered Vegas from the laptop. Did I have to do this?
Right now I'm only using AVI's that I download from the Internet and the demo videos that came with the computer can not be dragged into the timeline. Laptop is a Dell 9300.

I would think this is down to the avis you've downloaded - if they were created using a codec not on your PC then Vegas may not be able to see them.

To see if this is so, capture some original footage and see if this shows up.

And yes, you do need to register Vegas on the Laptop as well as your desktop.

Thanks Peter,
I just hooked up a Kanguru external firewire drive to the laptop and was able to drag the avi files to the timeline...Do you know why I can't drag the demo videos that came with the laptop? are they protected? they are some music videos and a video from Natural Geography.
Do you know anything about the Kanguru drive? I just bought it and transfered a bunch of video files and lost all of them when I tried to edit with them. I took them with me this
weekend, and couldn't do any work.

The demo videos may be designed to play in Media Player, but this doesn't always mean they will in Vegas.

Don't have experience of the Kanguru drive. When you say you "lost" them, do you mean they disappeared completely even in Windows Explorer? Sometimes external drives temporarily lose contact via loose or moved connectors.

Yes lost everything, even some photos (jpgs) I even lost the name of the Hard Drive. The first time I pluged it in it asked me to give it a name, and that got lost., and it created 3 folders with the letters l, m, n and y. and can not be deleted. And it shows that there are still 13 gigs of something in the drive...but can't see anything.
Should I re-format the drive? I'm going to call their customer service dept. tomorrow.
It's 11pm in California right now.
Thanks.

I definitely wouldn't reformat till you've talked to them. The data may be retrievable. Good luck.

first i would remove the hard drive and install it in your system internally .. this might void the warrenty , but if you need the files , its a safe way to do it and firewire cases are cheap anyway

see if you can get the files that way - if not , step 2
