AVI Files

Ok so I just got my Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition in the mail today and got everything out, installed it all and went to import some video clips and then everything fell apart. My media files are saved as .avi files but for some reason when I drag a clip into the timeline it only gets the audio. There is no video and I have checked the properties of the .avi files but all they say is that the stream is "offline" or it "couldnt detect streaming attributes". My camera is kind of a pain, and im gettin a new one soon, so that may be the problem. If anyone has any ideas id really appreciate it. thanks-cory

What kind of camera is it? How are you connecting it to the computer? What software are you using for capturing?

I have a samsung sports camcorder that records to a internal harddrive, practically a memory stick. I connect it to the computer via USB cable, and i use the software provided with the camera called Image Mixer. Its a terrible program and Im hoping just to get rid of the camera soon but theres a couple of clips i wanna use in my project. thanks a lot.-cory

Most likely you don't have the right codec to read the AVI contents. Download a copy of Gspot and have it tell you what's actually in the AVI file (probably MJPEG). If it is MJPEG I think you can go the the mainconcept web site and download their codec, it will let you read the contents of the AVI without purchasing.

iirc, they have a trial version of the MJPEG codec that will let you decode, but not encode without payment.

http://www.mainconcept.com/mpeg_encoder.shtml

Looks like the demo is fully functional except the put a watermark on things, but as I recall, the watermark is only added to stuff that's encoded, not decoded. In any event it will let you determine whether what your camera is putting out is mjpeg or not (though downloading a free copy of Gspot would tell you for certain what codec you need).
