AVI files and Vegas

Can you bring AVI files onto the timeline in Vegas without loosing the audio? I ask only because a friend has a trial version and when she brought the files onto the timeline the video was there but not the audio. Next week she is coming over to see if I can help (talk about the blind leading the blind). I thought I would check in and see if it was a problem in general.

She likely isn't using DV AVI files, but rather another codec downloaded from the web, and the codec either isn't accessible in Vegas, or isn't registered in Vegas.

hmm, anyway to find out? She has a 3 chip Panasonic using mini dv tapes. There is no problem with FCP or Premiere. I need to, if possible find a way to figure it out it would help she could use Vegas so we can work together (I'm not changing editing suite).

Assuming she's capturing with firewire, Vegas shouldn't have any problems.
Is she using VidCap (the Vegas capture utility) or bringing it n some other way?

I bring avi files into Vegas all the time and have never had a problem with the audio not being there. They are from a mini dv tape also.

A workaround is to bring the AVI file in to windows movie maker and compile it as a DV AVI.

I know movie maker stinks but I've done this with mjpeg avis and it works.

Take care.

...I've done this with mjpeg avis ...

Vegas Pro 8 added the ability to read these without the need for an additional codec.
If you have an earlier version, there are free MJPEG codecs available or you can install the demo of the MainConcept codec and use it without any problems as it'll only watermark if you use it for encoding.
