I would drop the AVI file into GSpot and see what codec it uses. It could be that you don't have that codec installed on your system. Vegas doesn't use Quicktime for AVI files so it doesn't matter if Quicktime can play it or not.

If you do think it's a Quicktime issue, then you should know that Quicktime 7.6.3+ introduced problems with many NLE's recently. Sony fixed it in Vegas Pro 9.0e. So either upgrade to Vegas Pro 9.0e or downgrade Quicktime to 7.6.2 and see if that fixes it.
