AVI files, no video in preview

Hello,
I am sure this has been discussed before, but with over 5,000 posts, I do not have the time to search.
The problem is that when i open an AVI file, vegas 8.0 only displays the audio track and not the video. Is this something to do with codec or something else? If this has been discussed in detail already, please just post the link. Thanks! :)

I have this same problem myself...so at least you're not the only one with this problem. It's even making me aggravated!

Yea - it's been around a few times....

I'll recommend KLite codec pack, and Eugenia will recommend ffdshow (lol) (a little presumptious on my part there)

It does sound like a codec issue from what you describe

That's cool to know. I looked for it on a few sites but i am a little confused. I do not have any problem watching AVI files. They play quite well on media player on my comp, I just can not get them to open properly in VMS. Does downloading the codecs automatically update VMS? Or is there a setting in Vegas I need to activate?

Even with ffdshow or xvid Vegas won't work consistently with xvid files. Over here, very few work, and on Vegas Pro more files work, but half of them without audio. From what I know, DivX/XViD support just ain't there on Vegas, and you will have to get lucky.

Where can I get the codec pack?

Got it. Thanks. Now what?

Now you install it. If Vegas works with your AVI files now, all is well. If not, download the freeware SUPER to save the files as another format and then edit them on Vegas.

The videos worked just fine when the version of this software was a trail and I had no problems. But even with the download, it still has the same problem I've been getting from the time I've purchased the software myself. Do you have the link to the freeware you mentioned? And what should I do with the codec pack/software I downloaded and installed already?

Keep the one you just downloaded.

Install SUPER and Huffyuv and select that codec when exporting with SUPER.
