AVI Files were working, Now they are Not

First off any Sony reps, I think the Sony CEO's need to read the book "The Best Service is No Service" and apply it to Son;'y customer service, my experience so far with the Vegas Studio 9 has been fraught with constant issues.

And support, well so far I haven't seen much support, It is like you have to go through a million different hoops to get a stinkin question answered. I really am utterly amazed at the poor level of support customers receive. You have to pay just to get some help over the phone on a product we purchased. Anyways I am not directing this at any of the customer support people just Sony in general. They need to rethink and revamp the entire customer service experience. Because Sony you get an F resoundingly from me and from the sounds of it many other folks on the internet when it comes to support or the lack thereof I should say.

All that aside I have an issue with AVI videos no longer showing up. I didn't realize until now that AVI is technically not supported which really seems kind of crazy since it is one of the most common formats out there. And why can you export to WMV but supposedly it isn't a supported import format.

Well AVI was importing correctly to Vegas 9 and I created some movies rendered them in different formats, all was working well. Then for some strange reason the next morning when I opened up Vegas again the AVI videos are no longer showing up and I haven't changed a darn thing.

Maybe it is a simple fix but I have read about everything I could possibly find on this issue and they were all downloading codecs and what not which I have already done. Installed them, didn't work, uninstalled them etc.

Is there a simple fix here or does AVI simply not compatible? I am at a loss?

I appreciate any help anyone can afford to give me.

BTW downloaded K-LIte, and all the other one's people recommend on here and other places. I am just wondering if it is some sort of setting. I just don't get why it did work and now it doesn't?

AVI files are supported in Vegas Movie Studio. Always have been.
But AVI is just a wrapper. Any of dozens of codecs can be inside the wrapper.
You need to find out "which" video codec is in your files and if it is installed on your machine. It is not in Sony's power, legally or otherwise, to install every possible codec on your machine, nor are installing codec "packages" indiscriminately a good idea, because doing so can change the functioning of other programs without your knowledge.

Here is a good place to start; suggest you download MediaInfo and find out what codecs are in your files.

Also, you may want to do a system restore to before your K-Lite installation.

If one AVI file opened in Vegas, and another did not, then they were almost certainly encoded differently. If an AVI file opened previously in Vegas, and you are sure the same file does not open now, then a codec got changed or removed and you may need to reinstall Vegas. But before you go that far, find out what codec(s) we are talking about and post the MediaInfo output here. We've had lots of experience at this.

By the way, this is a peer forum, and questions for Sony Technical Support can be submitted through the links at the top of this page. We're users, just like you.

Thanks for the help man. Much appreciated ;)

Referring to AVI being supported I was referencing the box of Sony Vegas with the list of supported formats, and AVI is not on there?

As far as indiscriminately installing codecs I only installed the ones, (one at a time, then uninstalling and rebooting before installing a new one) the one's that folks were referring to download to help fix the issue. But to no avail.

So I just decided to make a video as that will probably help much more and show you everything you need to see. Hope this helps and again thanks a TON for the assistance.

I do realize this is a user forum but am hoping if some Sony support person comes along they'll see my message.

It really boggles my mind how some company's handle customer support.

It's possible that one of the programs or codecs you installed (you mentioned several) hijacked the Vegas or system codecs. Sorry, I've never heard of the converter or player utilities you installed.

Since your timeline shows the audio track but not the video, and you say the same files worked before, I suspect this is the case.

Just uninstalling an application or codec does not re-register the original codecs.

In light of the tone of your posts, I do not represent Sony nor is this the place to seek tech support from Sony reps.

Two approaches you can take are (in the order I would take):
1) Do a System Restore back to a time before you started installing other video applications and you know the files were working in Vegas; and / or,
2) Reinstall your Sony applications.

Oh, and if you also updated your Quicktime or iTunes recently, you will want to roll those back since they crippled playback of certain file types in Vegas. See the Pro Forums for plenty of discussion on this.

Other than that, you may want to contact Tech Support using one of the free options at the top of the page. Good luck!

A similar thing happened to me where my files showed "off line". Couldn't figure out why or what happened as I didn't install any new software.

I de/reinstalled the Studio and it all worked fine. ... go figure.

Anyway, try this hope it works.
