AVI fomat

Hi all,

We have been using Vegas for video capture of tape about 90 minutes long. The resulting files are about 30G in size. We have 2 targets for these files, one is a web format for Media Player which renders down to about 90M in size, the second target is to create DVDs of these videos, which still cannot use the 30G size of the original file. Would it be better to do the capture in a lesser size format, to save disk space since I can't use a 30G file anyway? What is a good format for capture to target to a DVD?

You should always capture in AVI. It sounds like you're using DV .avi files, which is a very good choice. Capturing in a lesser format will often involve a severe quality loss and make the files very cumbersome to use on the timeline.

DVDs are always MPEG-2 format. After you've captured and edited you will render to MPEG-2 to make the DVD files. If you're using DVD Architect there is a template that produces exactly the type of files necessary. You'll also have to render the audio separately to an AC3 file. If you're using some other DVD authoring program make sure you use one of the DVD templates to get the best compatability for DVD burning.
