AVI format not recognized

I have Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum, version 9.0b. I captured DV tape fragments from my Panasonic GS400 using Vegas. A file has been created (AVI format), but the software refuses to drag the file to the timeline of a newly opened project. The file format is not recognized. I re-captured using native capture software of Panasonic (AVI also), and did it also with Movie Maker. Same result: The file cannot be read. Can anybody help? Many thanks.

Re-install Vegas. Vegas does support DV AVI.

I'm not an expert, but you could run Gspot, MediaInfo, or AVIcodec (all are free downloads) on your AVI file to see what codecs were used to encode the video and audio streams inside the AVI container. Once you know that, you can rule out whether the proper codecs exist on your PC for Vegas to use to understand the file your're trying to drop into the timeline.

You can also get a clue by trying to play the file with one of the media players on your PC. HTH.

It sounds like a strange problem, but I admit I ran into something similar once as well. Capture appeared to go just fine with Vegas and then the file couldn't be imported into te same VMS 9b. I weas fortunate enough several other programs that were capable of reading the AVI file that Vegas captured (if I recall I used either Nero or Super) and converted the offending file to mpg. Aside from the loss of date codes, it all worked out in the end. Never figured out why that one tape capture didn't work.

Having said that I have no idea why capture in the other programs wouldn't work either. Try out Super (erightsoft) and convert it. There are also other free conversion untiities as well that you can try, if for some reason the avi can't be read.
