avi from HP camera won't recognize

so I have a little HP Photosmart R837 camera (mostly designed for stills, I think) but the flash is soooo unflattering that I find that it's better to take short movies and then grab my favorite still frame. But Vegas will not recognize the avi, although it plays fine in crappy programs like windows media player. It's properties list at 640x480 and 24 fps. And, the audio will play if I drag it into the tracks. Is there some plug in I need for vegas to recognize the video?

I suspect that you're not using Vegas Pro 8 because it'll read MJPEG files which is what I suspect your camera is using to create the AVI file.
Use GSpot to verify this.
If this is the case, download and install the demo version of the MainConcept MJPEG codec.
As long as you're not using it to encode,it won't put the watermark on the output.
