avi problem in MS11 Platinum

kentm wrote on 1/29/2015, 1:37 PM
I am trying to open several .avi files that were recorded on a small pocket dvr. They are standard definition. MS 11 reports "an error opening one or more files. An error occurred while opening a codec."
These files play fine in WMP and open fine in WinMovMakr.
Any ideas as to why they will not open in MS11
Thanks

Post the file properties using MediaInfo.
You need a codec, but we don't know which one.
In the meantime, DONT download any codec packs.

Thanks for the reply. I had not used mediainfo before but I think I have what I want here.

Yep. Xvid and Divx are not designed to be edited. They are delivery (playback) only formats.

They can be edited though. Install the XviD codec and you'll be able to open them. Don't expect fantastic results, but you can work with them.

You need a Xvid "VFW" codec.
"Directshow" will not work in Vegas.

Problem solved. I downloaded from "xvid, com". It includes both versions and it works fine. I don't need super functionality, just the ability to trim.

Thanks to all for your interest and help. I greatly appreciate it.
