...client needs video output in avi for computer playback....no other format will do ... uncompressed is out of the question... audience will have WMP 7.1 and higher on their XP and 2000 boxes .... here comes the hard part...which Vegas5 avi codec should I use that all boxes are likely to have already installed...? ...TIA for your suggestions...

If these are web enabled computers, i would definitely use WMV 8 or 9. Media player will download the codec automatically.

You could also just use the plain old mpg1 codec files and simply rename your file extension ".avi".

...unfortunately, the client has a program that only accepts avi files...renaming them won't work...thanks anyway...

First of all, you should get a copy of the program.
Second, you should send him test clips to make sure he can read whatever you create. It may be that the program can use codecs on your computer that don't exist on his/hers.

I wish I could answer the question though. I can't. All I can say is "test".
