Avi's won't open in V5b

Transferred TV from VHS tape to my hard drive, with ATI 7500 All in Wonder card, in the past this has worked fine for me Now V5 only opens the audio. The AVI's play fine in Windows Media Player. I've repaired and reinstalled Vegas, any other ideas. My search on the forum did not provide an answer. Thanks for your help in advance. john.

Sorry to ask the obvious - but can you still open other AVIs in VEgas 5b? Let's start with what we know.

Yep, like Grazie said, just try that to be sure it's not the "whole" V5 that's the culprit.
By the way, do someone knows if Sony changed the codecs in V5 (from V4) ? That may be the cause..?

I've been having a similar problem with AVI files. I couldn't open video files from my still digital Canon G2 camera. Others too had this problem here. I learned that there must be around 30 kinds of AVI files on the globe and that codecs differ one from the other.

The turnaround: I re-render these AVI files in WinMovieMaker to AVI files too , but a kind of AVI that Vegas recognizes.

And I wrote to Canon telling them that for the price we pay for these cams, they should provide the codec on the installation disk. Usual answer there: we'll get your request to the appropriate department. "Cheap shot answer", that is, but I guess it's like voting; I just had to do that so my mind is clear...

Seems it is AVI's. DV's, MPG from older projects play fine. Avi's I have used in the past do not open in the Vegas TL, no video track shows. Audio is flat lined with no audio. I apologize for the time betwen responses, but I get called out at night. Thanks for your suggestions. I'll try Moviemaker. John.

Moviemaker worked fine. I used the DV-AVI codec and they open in Vegas. Still curious what is the culprit?

Try disabling "Ignore 3rd party codecs".
Also Canopus have a little free utility for converting AVI file types that has worked for me. I've used it to convert an AVI T2 file to a AVI T2 file and then Vegas will accept it. Vegas is it seems very twitchy about the header data.

Yup, sounds like Bob's feedback, "Ignore 3rd party codecs" could be on the money.

You say you reinstalled and "repaired" Vegas. Betcha you've got this option "unchecked" still. It wont do any harm, it will just make sure that any other codecs wont get in the way for Vegas. However if you should need this option then you can uncheck it - but THEN you would be in control, and not leaving it to chance - yeah? I've never consciously "used" other codecs . . I just get on with the task of editing stuff straight from my own cammie and stills and artwork I create. Do you have work coming in from all sorts of sources?

Best regards,

Grazie

Thanks guys. Ignore 3rd party was unchecked. Fixed that, and all is well with my world again, plus I have a work around. You take your satisfaction where you can get it, mostly in small doses. Thanks again, John.
