All AVIs have split sound and video. Video now says "media offline." Even if I start a brand new movie, and insert an AVI file, only the sound appears. The AVI files will play in other applications. Standard video and stills work fine. I am running Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 7.0
AVI files come in a gazillion different flavors, and there is no such thing as "standard video."
Download MediaInfo and post the information it gives about your files so that it can be determined which video codec was used. What was the source of the files; a camcorder, a pocket camcorder, a point-and-shoot, an internet download, what?
The AVI files are from my simple point & shoot camera. (Canon PowerShot A710 IS). I have used these files for several years (I make one BIG family video each year - up to 90 minutes - and several smaller videos). They have always worked without a problem. This year I worked (on and off all year) until about August. Everything was fine. I went into it again in September and the GREAT SPLIT had occured on all AVI files. My "standard video" is from my camcorder (Canon Elura 90). The strangest thing is that now, even if I try to create a new file, with a new avi -- the split occurs.
No idea what you mean by "split."
Can you post a screenshot?
Video files show up as a video track and an audio track.
Your Canon uses MJPEG video.
Do you have an MJPEG (not MPEG) codec installed?
Are you saying that DV-AVI files from your Elura also show as "media offline"?
Have you been using the Trimmer window?

Split = the video and audio are no longer one item. The audio track still works. The video track displays "media offline" above each audio bit of the problem files.
Screenshot -- does not paste into this window. Is there another way to show you?
All video from the Elura works fine.
I don't use the Trimmer window. I just edit in the tracks.
THANKS. I got my husband to help interpret/download etc. You pointed us in the right direction (codex). A download, an install, a few help searches later and he found under Options>General in Vegas a choice to ignore third party codex. Unchecking this box solved my dilema! Thanks very much for being your help this evening!!
