AVI vs RAW DV format...?

I have just bought a Sony MCR1 recording unit and am using it with a PD170. Love it so far.

A question: the unit can record in AVI format or RAW DV format (among others). When I record AVI and bring it into Vegas, Vegas takes some extra time to create an audio proxy file. When I record RAW DV and bring it into Vegas, the audio is apparently immediately usable.
Given that, is there any reason I should choose AVI rather than RAW DV for recording?

I do know that AVI is a "wrapper" rather than a "format" (though I don't fully understand the details of that).
OBSERVATIONS re AVI vs RAW DV captured in the MCR1:
1. When footage is captured as RAW DV, the audio portion is immediately available for editing, when the clip is loaded into Vegas. If captured as AVI, Vegas first has to create a proxy file before the audio is usable.
2. When I have the PD170 set to capture 16x9 widescreen instead of 4x3, that info is apparently not preserved when I capture to the MCR1 in RAW DV format -- when I set up a NTSC Widescreen project in Vegas, the captured clip loads into Vegas with pixel ratio of regular DV. (Though it is possible to change this to Widescreen in the Media Properties dialog specific to the clip.)
If I capture widescreen from the PD170 to the MCR1, using AVI as my selection in the MCR1, then the widescreen-setting info IS preserved in the resulting clip, and it loads into the Vegas project as widescreen footage.
