.avi won't import--any thoughts?

GFFmatt wrote on 10/20/2009, 9:02 PM
I received a DVD of .avi files (animations) that I need to import into Vegas pro 9. They import but with no audio or video. I tried to bring them into Pinnacle Studio 11 as well with the same result. Software recognizes the file, but the .avi won't play.

I copy/pasted the files from the DVD to my hard drive, then imported from my hard drive.

Any thoughts on what I'm missing here?

Share some details about your files. All AVIs are not created equal.
Download MediaInfo and post the information about your files here.
You may need extra codecs, or conversion in the case of Apple animation.

Not quite enough information -- I need the codecs.
MediaInfo is here:

I've got mediafile, I downloaded per your recommendation.

I have the window up with a clip from the troubled .avi files. Where from here can I find the codec information?

My apologies for my ignorance!

1. Once again, you need to download and install MediaInfo, not mediafile!
2. Right-click on your file icon, click on "MediaInfo", and copy the information.
3. Post the information here in this thread so we can look at the codec information.

I'll check back tomorrow.

do they play in quicktime as avi?

try changing the extension to mp4 instead of avi.

there's a buzz about qt versions and vegas, check this forum, versions later than 7.6.2 and vegas can't see them.

I'll try that! BUT how do I change the extension?

When I'm stuck I just run the file through FormatFactory. Converting to an mp4 seems to work on just about everything. Saved me many times.

is this the helpful info?

1) Your files are encoded 'dvc', which is Apple's DVCPRO codec.
2) I know of no codecs that will open this natively in Vegas. The professional application that may do this is called Raylight. Others may be able to shed more light on this.
3) Quicktime Pro "may" be able to convert, but since the newest version breaks other file types in Vegas, this is not an option.
4) They could possibly be converted using Super or Format Factory, but the quality would probably suffer.
5) There appears to be no audio track in your files -- they are video only.

Can you upload a clip somewhere? Others may be able to play with it and provide some more specific suggestions.
