.AVI won't open in VV3...

FuTz wrote on 6/10/2002, 10:11 PM
My question may be naive but... I got a Canon G2 digital still-camera. It does .avi video files too but I can't open them in VV3. Are all the ".avi" files the same? Could Canon have "their own" .avi files? I'd like to edit some of these short clips together or include them in a project but I can't. I even got Schumacher passing Montoya on one of them for God's sake... but I can't even open it in VV3. I don't care about Schumi passing and would like to finally see Montoya win some day but... what about these .avi files that don't open? I am soooo sad now. And Schumi won: grrrr...again...

.avi files are done in SEVERAL formats. (as is noted by the dropdown in VV3) you may want to check if you can play the file on your computer. whn you do, go to view and check the statistics. this can be helpful in determining if you can use it in a project. also, you may want to check if they are really avi files and not mpeg files that have been given an avi attachment. (as both are compatible with windows) if so, then you may not be able to play the mpeg file because it is not in a properly noticed VV3 format. (this is what it sounds more like to me.. but hey)

Thanks, I'll be checkin'it very soon...!

..."no statistics available"...
Even Premiere won't open it. Bad. I could have used this cam to make some special effects, some emergency-shooting, etc. since it's very light to carry with me... and fast to operate...
Thanks again.

do you have Quicktime player? Will that open it? if so, what are the file properties, MJPEG maybe?
FuTz wrote on 6/11/2002, 5:29 PM
In Quicktime:
Says: "animation JPEG OpenDML" for video track. For the whole clip (sequence) it says: "copyright SFT" "CanonMVI01".
All the video clips are named: "(some number here) _MVI.AVI"

try downloading and installing the MJPEG codec from http://www.morgan-multimedia.com

But will this program allow me to change the format so I can edit it later in VV3?
I downloaded it but didn't install right away cause from what I read on their site, I got no answer for that question.
I'd like to cut, add effects, etc... later to those clips.
Thanks!

Installing this codec allows Vegas to open (and therefore edit) Fuji MJPEG .avi files (from their digi still camera). This codec will hopefully work with your Canon .avi files too. Please post results-

I've got a different Canon digital still camera (S110) and I can open the AVI files that it makes just fine in Windows Media Player *and* in Vegas. They are M-JPEG format. You might have to install the software that came with the camera in order to get the appropriate AVI M-JPEG codec on your system. There's a chance that Windows Media Player might download it if you try to open the AVI in there, and if it does, then Vegas will use the codec too.

I sure installed the software that was with the camera and I even tried to pick the files both in Explorer AND from the Canon files themselves (Zoombrowser). The only thing that goes up in the timeline is the sound... I'll install the Morgan's program now and post you my results...
FuTz wrote on 6/12/2002, 1:16 PM
HHA !!! BINGO !!! Works with Morgan's Codec. Now I'll have to buy this thing in 60 days... But I may try a few other things, there must be a way... I don't get it why it doesn't work from the start with Canon's Zoombrowser...

There might be other installs on the CD (other than ZoomBrowser) that could get you the codec. Perhaps when you connect the camera via USB and it installs drivers it also installs the codec? I don't have my Canon CD in front of me, and I also didn't need to install anything, apparently Windows XP has that codec already (or maybe WMP downloaded it).

I think so. I got a few problems with their "zoombrowser" too for downloading my pictures; tried to re-install, etc... Now, it works in ONE manner so I stick with it when I have to download pictures. I don't particularly like their program though (Canon)... too fragile and the way the whole thing "behaves" (like not being completely working in conjunction with Explorer, or when you delete, it's REALLY deleted (not in waste basket) and the fact you got to stick in their program THEN Explorer "follows"...)
I guess with XP you could completely be independant of their software so if I had it, I'd surely try managing my pictures only with it (XP) before installing anything from Canon again... In fact, I really like this camera but the software, if I could, I'd toss it... But I'm still happy with Win2K for the moment so it'll be for "another later"... meanwhile, I'll try to fix my little bug, hee hee hee...
Thanks for your help again!

There it goes again. I just tried and it doesn't work anymore...

? :/

You might just want to take the XP plunge. I was sticking with Win98SE at home, but my new machine came with XP. I was pleasantly surprised by the built-ins like the built-in support for my camera and the built-in picture viewer. It will also print single images, multiple images, or contact sheets.

Yeah. I've got this "XP-itch" which is stronger and stronger...

I finally scratched it yesterday, after much procrastination, and it feels good. Stability, options, just better all around. And you can go to NTFS. You won't regret it. Just Roxio products don't get along with it, but what else is new? You might want run the XP Upgrade Advisor first. You can find it on the XP site.
