Avid makes two codec packs available - one thru distribution of its pro partners - and that might include Atomos as well as many other suppliers....

The second one is a free public codec pack which is dubbed "LE" and that is a subset of their larger pro codec pack. Only the codecs found in LE can be freely used in VegasPro.

Does your Atmos record DNxHD to MXF or MOV format?

Hello,

Atomos is a licensee of codecs http://www.avid.com/US/resources/dnxhd-codec-licensees

Sony Vegas Pro 13 is not on the list. There is a licensee of Avid DNxHD codec

How do I edit video Avid DNxHD for sale Avid DNxHD format?

I'm looking for a free video codec, which will open the Avid DNxHD codec in Sony Vegas Pro 13

Atomos videos are MOV format.

Atomos also record codec Apple Pro Ress but Sony Vegas Pro 13 does not read well codecs in Apple Pro Ress

Avid is a very serious vendor about what choices it makes. The intent is to license and sell software and codec that will be used appropriately. It is not in the "free" space as a rule.
If your direction is to use VegasPro as an NLE then you must do that with a transcode done by someone for you that VegasPro can handle.

"But the contract says that it is not a codec for commercial use."

You misunderstand the meaning of "commercial use"

Atamos etc. embed Avid's IP in the product they sell, they need a licence because that's commercial use. Anyone who makes and sells a DVD player needs an MPEG-1/2 licence, again they make money from the sale of the IP.

None of us need such a licence, we're not selling Avid's IP.
IF SCS want to include Avid's IP within Vegas then yes, they need a licence from Avid to do so.

There are some restrictions on the use of these "open" licences from MPEGLA, from memory of my conversation with MPEGLA you'd need to be running 500,000 concurrent encoders to have to pay a royalty. As of the date of that conversation not even YouTube met that limitation.

Thank you for your answers.

I'm not interested DVD equipment sales.

Wants to sell the material edited in Avid DNxHD codec or any other codec using the Sony Vegas Pro 13. I really like the Sony Vegas Pro 13, but I wish that they limit the Avid DNxHD codec that only for their own internal use and not for commercial use. I bought Sony Vegas Pro 13 for commercial purposes with a view to selling videos of Atomos Ninja 2 and editing materials

" I bought Sony Vegas Pro 13 for commercial purposes with a view to selling videos of Atomos Ninja 2 and editing materials."

Which you can do under the terms of the licence granted to you by Avid and MPEGLA. I appreciate that English might not be your first language and you should know that even for those whom it is the terms of the licence are confusing. It does not in any way restricts you from using Avid's DNxHD codec in the production of content that you will sell.

Poorly know English but I try to

I could not understand the Avid DNxHD and MPEG.LA codec contract and so I wrote here request.

So I bought Atomos Ninija 2 and Sony Vegas Pro 13, but for commercial purposes. I did not understand why Sony Vegas Pro package 13 is Avid DNxHD codec separately installed only on the part of Avid

" I did not understand why Sony Vegas Pro package 13 is Avid DNxHD codec separately installed only on the part of Avid "

Because if SCS or Apple want to include it in their software THEN they (Apple, SCS etc.) have to pay a licence fee to Avid for each copy of their NLE they sell.

FotoVideo,

I also bought Ninja 2 as HD Recorder to recording my Live multi camera switching on location, and I don't have any issue with this. Everyone who use Atomos Ninja 2 or Shogun along side their Sony A7s has no problem with this. If this is a problem since the first time, I believe another Sony A7s forums or video articles will Highlight this topic.

So far I can understand AVID's License, in simple words, we are just using this codec to use for our commercial activity on PRODUCING CONTENT WITH IT.
You ARE NOT USING THIS TO MAKE NEW DEVICES or equipment or writing software embedding Avid's DNxHD's technology.

Don't worry about it.

Ok. I also have a lot of movies in the Apple ProRes codec. Before I bought the Sony Vegas Pro 13 reads badly codec Apple Pro Ress.

Well-free program converts videos MPEG_Streamclip with Apple Pro Ress Avid DNxHD codec on.

MPEG_Streamclip only problem is there is no license for the Avid DNxHD codec. Do not bother to use it commercially?

" Do not bother to use it commercially?"

"commercially" has nothing to do with anything you, I or the rest of the world's editors do, please try to get that word right out of your head, it is completely irrelevant.
