Wonderful!!! Two of three of my upgrade criteria are met!! I just hope to be able to get the product in the door and not have to cross my fingers when my wife asks me how much it costs!

I just registered for the one day VASST Tour Vegas4.0/DVD Architect Training at the Creative Cow WEST! I can't wait to get my hands on this new product...and to meet Doug and get some real product trainig.

In the past two years I've been researching software/hardware solutions for my new video production business. I can't tell you how much time and bucks I've spent on crap products and crap support. The name Vegas turned me off (please don't get a whole diatribe going on the forum over this again!) but after I downloaded the trial software I was hooked.

SoFo should have set in place a network of training "agents" in major cities to do what Doug and his guys do. Adobe and those guys realized the value of this a long time ago and it paid off for them in spades. If Vegas gets purchased I hope the new owners do this. I also hope the Sunday announcement is real good news for us Vegas fanatics.

Steve,
Looking forward to seeing you at the COW VASST!!

Damn you SoFo!

I had officially sworn off the idea of DVD authoring for the time being...

Until I heard the magic words 'DVD Architect.'

Now I've seen a screenshot. It's sexy. I'm sold.

Anyone have a recommendation on a burner?

David.

I recommend the Pioneer DVR-A05. I have the previous generation, A04, and it's never burned a coaster, and the DVD-R standard has the highest compatibility rating for working in set-top players. Of course the media you use is just as important, so stick with name brand stuff. Check www.tapeandmedia.com for good prices ($3.39 per disc for Pioneer brand) and Apple is supposed to be lowering their media to $3 a piece soon too.

I'm becoming ever more certain that SoFo is going to offload everything EXCEPT AP, SF, CDA and Vegas ...

A04 users who use TDK media, I just found TDK DVD-R media at jandr.com for $2.00 a piece in a spindle of 15. You can also get a 10-pack (w/jewel cases) for I think $2.60 a piece. That's a pretty big drop from previous TDK prices, and I'm finding their media to work flawlessly with my A04.

We have have the pioneer AO3 and AO4 in our systems here at Sundance. Both work wonderfully. So long as we don't use Maxell or DataTech media, no problems. Sony, TDK, Optodisk all burn beautifully, and we've done burns with DVDA already in the beta testing phase, using this media

Just got through burning 50 Ritek DVD-R ($85/100 on a spindle)

Not one single coaster.

Using a Sony DRU 500A

Can only get them to burn at 1x, but no duds.

I don't understand why there is such a great range in prices.

OK, Reality Check here.

I am also pretty excited about V4. As all of you, I have frequently whinned SoFo for improvements on VV3 ...

But ... V4 ... how much $$$ ???

You know, I am a *private* user (not many of them living anynore...) I shelled out a considerable chunk of my monthly income to get my hand on VV3. And then the MPEG plug-in. And then, something else.

Happy user here.

But ...

Win98 went away, WinMe came and went, the same with Win2k/NT. Now everybody uses WinXP. Not me. I am still collecting the dosh.
Same with media. I have a CD recorder (lucky me) but no DVD recorder.

Now, whenever someone comes to this Forum with a problem and he/she is using Win9x, invariably someone ends up saying "update to XP, your problems will go" ...
Same goes with DVD. Nobody discusses Mpeg rendering, CD-menus or VCD/SVCD quality anymore, new way to go is DVD *only*.
My processor ? A Duron 800 yet. My next money ? Goes to a Pentium/Athlon 2800. Maybe first quarter of 2003. Again, my own Bank break.

I am terrified. What if, in 12 months I still can't afford the upgrade and have to stick with VV3 ? I will be an *Alien*, nobody will be able to talk with me in this Forum ...

Questions:
How do you lucky people get the $$$ to buy all the goodies, and then still have time to "live inside" this Forum and always be upfront in the leading edge ??? You wouldn't if you had a boss peering over your shoulder, so you must be all $R$I$C$H$ and sleepless ...

Oh, how do I envy you, the poor me ...

Back to ground. Don't take me wrong, I am *absolutely* for the progress, what is difficult for me to swallow is the fact that everybody here seems to be in the train, and I am just running behind ...
Of course, SoFo wants my money every year, but the sad truth is that *everybody* wants my money ...

That is really not the case. I produce both DVD and CD Multimedia format. Apples and oranges. DVD is not going to replace CD anytime soon or ever. I cannot predict the future but I can tell you there is a great demand for CD media. DVD is a wonderful format and one of my wishes has been answered by Sonic Foundry creating a DVD software solution. This should have no effect on support for CD and encoding for CD.

If you want to play with CD Menu's get Multimedia builder(mediachance)http://www.mediachance.com/ $50 dollar program. Free trial download.

I have no doubt that VV3 will remain supported for a good while.
Go to a computer show and pick up an OEM version of XP. I saw them for around 90 to 100 dollars.

Worry about things you can actively participate in the creation of.
For the rest of your concerns. -Fugettaboutit-

W98SE runs great for me. It's apparently more tender then XP, but I refuse to feed the MS monster any more, and all I have to do is reboot when I sign off every night. Next day, fresh start.

Ditto for the 4GB limitation. With VV3, it's not a limitation. I've done a few rather sophisticated DVD projects so far, and have never felt hampered in any way with W98SE.

No, I'm not a Luddite. I just dislike the whole "forced upgrade" process, and it reminds me of the cars back in the 1960's where every year the tail fins got swoopier, or the shape of the speedometer was changed.

Actually, I think (and hope) my next migration will be to Linux. It would be nice if Vegas could be ported over to that OS (sigh).
Spot|DSE wrote on 1/14/2003, 10:15 AM
OUCH!
You'll gain a LOT by going to XP, whether you like it or not. WDM, faster processing, better CPU resourcing. Nobody likes to spend more money, but if it makes nearly every app written in the past 2 years faster and more efficient, it's worth it. Vegas, Sonar, Protools, After Effects, Forge, ACID all run better, faster, and easier on XP.
Dat's a fact, Jack!

Still using Win2k. No problems so far and I haven't reinstalled it since a year and a half. If it crashes some day, I'll jump to XP but so far Win2k's been a lot better than Win98 and ***a sooooo much LOT better*** than WinMe (which I threw away after 10 days-what a piece of garbage it was on my system!)(but it worked nice on one of my friend's system though...). All the people I know who installed XP don't regret it so far, and it's been a year. They're all very satisfied with this OS. Two of them jumped from Win98 to XP so it's very understandable...
Concerning DVD recording/authoring I think I'll wait for a while; still too many questions on various forums concerning this. I really don't feel like tuning and tweaking something for months to come now... maybe later.
Spot|DSE wrote on 1/14/2003, 5:31 PM
Win2K or WinXP both have the better/updated WDM driver ability, and other perks. I should have been more clear. Sorry.

Can I assume that if you will be demoing/training people on VV4 that it will be AVAILABLE at least by the show date or are you previewing the product?

Any idea when VV4 will be available? I assume either on or before your presentation at the Creative Cow event! :)

I don't think anyone will answer this question.

I'm trying to find out the answer as well, but no one in the know is talking.
