Back to Square 1 - The Quest for Crashless Vegas

I previously saw such a dramatic decrease in crashes after adding more ram to my PC, after messing around with memory intensive plugins it was looking good for awhile. But last night I was working on a simple "opening credits" scene, just using the standard Text generator on a black background, and I started getting crash after crash after crash.

So maybe the increased memory helped with those plugins that needed more ram to work better. But a simple, low memory, plain jane text - after several copy and pastes, crashed Vegas about a dozen times while putting together just 10 graphics slides. Maybe I should have used Pro Titler, and in some warped way I might have seen better results?

While we're on the subject, I visited Videomaker online and read a glowing review of Sony Vegas 11. The reviewer went on at length singing the praises of the latest edition and it sounded more like an advertisement/endorsement/description written by Sony than it did an honest, unbiased review. Yes, perhaps the reviewer is one of the lucky ones that don't have any problems with Vegas 11, but surely (as I wrote in my comment about the review) SOMEONE at Videomaker magazine must have either heard about or experienced the bugs so many of us are having. But there wasn't a single mention of anything wrong.

As I also wrote in my comment, "I know where I stand as a Sony Vegas user, but I'm not really sure about any future reviews I might read in Videomaker."

Videomaker is really just a big advertisement in itself in my experience/opinion.
Generally there are two or three short reviews, which are always show the reviewed product to be good or great.
And then they fill the rest of the magazine with a totally useless "buyers guide" which lists available gear of some category with no more information than you could find yourself online.
I subscribed for a few years and recently let my subscription run out.

Hulk - That's starting to become my opinion too about Videomaker. The more I browse on their site, the more disappointed I am.

I just watched a video tutorial they had posted on how to do a fade-out or transporter effect. It was posted by a young man who obviously had a bit more to learn about the best way to do this before he should have posted his tutorial. Yes, I know we were all beginners once and I do not fault the young man at all for wanting to share his knowledge and for the effort he put into making the video. But lets just say it's not one I would have chosen to put on Videomaker's website, especially if they want to portray the image of credibility, accuracy and professionalism. Sadly this video tutorial was probably best placed on YouTube.

You know, all the reports about V11 on DVInfo.net are very positive as well.

It makes me further suspect my large collection of plugins. It seems like most of the complaints are from users who have been using Vegas through many generations. I could probably get V11 to run smoothly if I just cleared out all of my Vegas specific plugins, not that I have any desire to do this.

Laurence, I agree. I've been reading DVInfo very closely on this. I'm not convinced the the happy campers have the range nor variety of plugs I've got going. And like you, I was going to temporarily remove all the plugs.

But I ain't.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, albeit an unfounded-able suspicion.

Grazie, Just checking whether unfounded-able is Queens English, but what would I know since I'm from convict stock.

All that aside I think the point you & Lawrence make has merit!

<It makes me further suspect my large collection of plugins>

I have no plugins installed other than those from New Blue that were bundled with V11; I don't use them in my projects and Vegas 11(64) crashes regularly on both my home and work systems. At work I use an HP workstation-class Z400 with a 6-core Xeon CPU and 12gigs of ECC RAM; at home I have a self-built Core i5 with just 8gigs of RAM.

Bugs are much less common, but last week I found one: I was unable to either play or render a 20-second project that consisted of three layers of generated media. I simply copied/pasted the media into Vegas 10e (64) and it worked without a hitch. Thankfully I'm not a new user and have Vegas 10 to fall back on.

Hi Guy S.

Not too sure that what you describe is a bug in VP 11, as it wasn't reproducable here. After reading your post, I put together a Vegas project of 20 secs with 3 layers of generated media - a chequerboard, a vignette and a colour gradient and that was fine, rendered it out to HD 720p no problem. Then went back and added a 4th layer of "Title & Text" bouncing text, again no problem with Vegas timeline or rendering, so not able to reproduce here (on a pretty limited laptop config: F series Sony Vaio i&, 6 GB RAM, Nvidia GT330M (barely there) graphics card.
