Background audio on menus turns into HUGE file

Hi Folks,

I read through many threads and see a myriad of problems being reported I didnt quite see my situation so I thought I would post and see if I can explain it throughly enough and get a solution.

Ok, I am doing all my editing and encoding in Vegas 4>DVD-A, it looks really good, I love the look of the program but here is the problem.

I have imported my video and matching ac3 streams into the work area, everything is well. I then create the chapter selection menus and optimize disc tells me that the menu file size is miniscule. The problem happens when I import an audio file to play in the background. I made an audio file using V4 5.1 surround ac3 template and the final file size is a whopping 13 megabytes. i link that background audio to the chapter selection menu screen and click optimize and the menu has exploded into a 2.3 GIG file!!! I then change the format setting to AC-3 Stereo and it goes down to 128.8 meg, much better but still thats 10 times as big as my original file!! I take the audio clip out altogether and it goes back to a .5mb file. These are AC3 files made in Vegas expressly so they wouldnt have to be recompressed (like the techs mentioned) but it still doesnt seem right. Am I doing something wrong or is this simply just a bug in the program what will be ironed out with the first fix (which obviously cant come too soon!)

I read over other threads and saw tech support responses but they just dont seem to either address my issues or answer the question, often it seems like they just give a quick rehash of a couple pages out of the manual (which doesnt explain very much)

Ok, so does anybody have a suggestion? Mucho gracias in advance!

ROCK ON!

Just had the same thing happen to me. I added an AC-3 5.1 file as background music
on the main menue and the total file size exploded. A 10.7 mb audio file now shows
207 mb in total file useage.

Have you talked to SF support about this yet ??

This is a known issue. Please see the following post:

Hello SF Tech,

Thanks for the response, I previously read that post but wasnt quite sure what to make of it.

as for issue 1, i am importing AC3 files rendered using the Vegas 4 AC3 5.1 Surround Template and that results in a huge file size. if i change it to just AC3 Stereo then the file reduces considerably but still seems rather large (130 meg from an original 13 meg file)

as for issue 2, i would prefer an animated thumbnail, how do i insure the thumbnail animation is shorter than the menu length? i see where i can determine where the animation begins but how do i make it stop after say 15-20 seconds.

i am rendering my project and the encoding times are huge! each menu page is taking over 5 hours to render, probably because the thumbnails are encoding from the start point of the animation to the end of the file, and with a 2 hour video i can see where that would result in a long render time.

otherwise i am extremely happy with Vegas 4 + DVD Architect, hats off to Sonic Foundry from this FORMER Premiere user. i attended the '02 WEVA EXPO and took the Intro to Vegas Video course and it changed how i look at editing and SO LONG PREMIERE!!! (and good riddance!)

Thanks for the forum support, I look forward to solving my problem.
