Backing up Vegas 4.0e presets

tapeless wrote on 6/20/2004, 7:44 PM
I have asked this question on the Cow forum, but no one seems to know the answer.
I have created several text presets in Vegas 4.0e that I would like to save just in case I ever need to reformat (been there done that). I downloaded Sony's Preset Manager, but the whole program doesn't make much sense to me although it says it will save presets for Sound Forge, Acid, Vegas, etc...I think it is more for audio presets??? Is there a file somewhere that can be saved to disk that holds all of the presets you've created? Again, I am not asking how to save presets...but how to back up presets you have already saved within Vegas.
Thanks,
Ted

When you open Preset Manager you will see the bottom window says System Presets. These are all the presets Preset Manager found on your system.

Simply drag all the folders from the bottom window to the top window > File > Save as > name and save it somewhere you can find it.

The preset manager I was referring to is downloadable here on Sony's site. It's a stand alone program....but....it still doesn't do what I need. It only saves the AUDIO presets that I have created. I am trying to figure out how to back up my media generated presets such as text. Surely this is possible as I can only imagine that lots of people have these types of presets made, and would rather not loose them. They are obviously saved somewhere in a file but I can't find it anywhere. I did find the directory where custom rendering presets are saved (buried way down deep under my \Documents and Settings folder), but no media generated presets. We need to be able to backup these presets also.

You can sort of back up text presets.
You do know, I trust, that when you create a particular layout you like, you can type in a name in the preset box and click the floppy disk icon to save it.
The drawback to doing this is that you also save whatever text you created. My workaround is to use a single letter in your preset. That way, you won't have too much to change.
BTW, nothing's changed in version 5 either :-(

Yes, as I stated in the original post of this thread, I already have several text presets I have created (font, size, drop shadow, etc.) and saved as a named preset. BUT...if I ever have a hard drive crash, or need to re-format...those presets I have created are lost unless there is a way to save them. Otherwise, if you have to re-install Vegas, all you have are the factory presets that are installed with Vegas. Thanks for all the replies.

SONY....do you have an answer to this question??? Is there a way to back-up user created text presets in Vegas 4.0e? When you create and save a user preset, where is the preset saved to? I would like to back up this file so I don't have to create all of them again when I re-format.

In Vegas 5, preset files have a DXP extension. The first time I created a text preset, I discovered a Preset directory in my Vegas directory. Under that was one of those gibberish-named folders (long string of numbers, letters, and dashes), and in there was the DXP file with the same name as what I called the preset.

Not sure if this is the same in Vegas 4 (I don't think I still have it installed anywhere), but that might be a good place to start.

The issue is, I don't know how Vegas (or Windows) chooses what to name the directory below Presets, or what it expects it to be called. You'd probably want to back up the whole directory, but I sure couldn't guarantee that Vegas would find it in future installations.

Never have been a fan of those gibberish-name directories...

Upon further reflection, of course, the thing to do would be (if, for example, your have to reformat your harddrive and reinstall Vegas) to create a preset under the new installation and use whatever directory it creates. Duh. :)

Not the most elegant but should work;

Load all your FX with your presets in a new project and save the .veg file off to a safe place. Of course you may need several tracks and must continue to update it but better than nothing.

Thanks guys...I'll look for that file extention. If I can't find it, I'll try your suggestion mj.
Thanks again.

Did you ever find a good method for backing up the presets you made in Vegas 4? I would like to back them up so I can restore them to new PC. If I do a seach on my whole PC for the name of a preset that I created, I don't find it anywhere, so they must be hidden inside something.

I have V5 but haven't installed yet but would be also interested if you found a way to back them/restore them in V5.

Thank you.

I would have answered this had I seen it -

Short answer is that there is not an "easy" way to do it because the vartious custom presets are save din various places. You need to go into the windows reg and export reg settings for starters. Here is an overly simple explination that I posted a while ago, for Vegas but for Vegas 5 just change the directory to reflect that. ALso this is only for FX Chains/Packages and for FX custom settings.

if you want the Fx "packages" :

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DirectShow\Presets\FX Packages]

If you want individual effect settings than it is:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DXTransform\Presets]

You need to

1> Export those reg trees and save.
2> Copy all the named files. (i.e - all files under 'Vegas 4.0\Presets\' and 'Vegas 4.0\Presets\FX Packages')
3> Place the files/folders in step "2" into the same location on the other computer.
4> Place the "*.reg" files from step "1" somewhere on the other computer and click on them.
