Backup / Archive

Hey,

I've just completed a project and want to wipe it from my hard drive and back it up on DVD. It's not a large project, so it will fit on a single DVD. Is there a particular "best" method for doing this, or is it just a matter of copying the relevant folders to DVD?

Thanks!

I have heard that standard dvds and cds are not designed for archiving and that data may only last a few years. I've searched for "archival" discs without success but I have heard they are available. Does anyone have any experience in this area ?

I'd just buy two different model 500 GB hard drives and RAID them.

My question was actually more about which files and folders I need to backup in case I want to re-visit it again sometime in the future. I will likely backup to DVD and Hard Disk.

Thanks.

All the project files and original files, e.g. the captured .avi or .m2t, pictures, audio etc. Pretty much everything, except possibly the final render -- if you don't mind re-rendering in the future.

Dave,

One method to "archive" a project would be to go to File > Save As... and then select the checkbox for "save and trim media with project, and place the new project in a temporary folder. I haven't actually used this, but it seems like it should put all your project media in that folder.

One thing I'm not quite sure about is the "trim media" part - I would probably want to save the original media in some cases.

Second, if I wanted to use this method, I would probably re-render from this new project, and create the DVD from it instead of what I was originally working on, to make sure that the archive really does match the rendered project/DVD image.

Himanshu,

Thanks, that sounds like a good procedure. I'll give it a try.

Thanks.
