Backup/archive plan for HD video files

I did a search here, and it seems this topic might need updating with what people are doing with their HD cameras that record to memory cards instead of tape.

What do people out there do for archiving their original source video files? I'm pondering having a couple large hard drives for ongoing work and semi-permanent archiving, but space will run out and of course hard drives fail. Do people backup to DVD and store offsite? Some other approach?

Thanks!

I would say the majority of home users have no backups or archives at all. Once they burn to a video DVD, that's it. This is one of the reasons I prefer tape camcorders. Yes, tape can / will eventually lose magnetism, but still last longer than DVD. We can only hope that the DVD manufacturing process will start creating DVDs with longevity in mind.

Thanks, this makes sense for people who have chosen to stay with tape.

As for DVD longevity, you might look into MAM-A Gold DVDs, or Verbatim Ultralife. These are manufactured to last longer than "regular" DVDs.

I know lots of people are turning to tapeless, so I am wondering what they're doing out there....

User hard discs - but use two independent hard discs. That is how people that I know store their footage. And I do not think that this is a minority.
