Bad Install? Take Two

bjtap wrote on 3/7/2002, 7:02 PM
Support has not answered my two requests for help and the first time I posted this here support passed it by... so take two:

When I start VV3.0 or 3.0a I receive: "Rundll: Error Loading C:\PROGRA~1\Sonic
The Specified Module Cannot be Found" error box. I click okay and the program proceeds to load and appears to run normally. I say appears because as I was doing the tutorial I discovered in the audio envelopes the default buttons show "unregistered" while below they do show the correct envelope name. Not sure if there are other symptoms of this problem.
Thanks,
Barry

If I were you, I'd un-install vv3, re-install my OS-(retain your old settings), and then try vegas again. When you start getting weird messages like yours, you can save a lot of time by insuring that you have a properly operating OS, with no problems of its own. Ascertain this before re-installing vegas. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble if you just make sure the computer is functioning properly, w/no hardware or resource conflicts, before you start trying to interpret the meaning of error messages. Also, you might try posting your OS and computer specs.

jboy,
Thanks for your advice. I am using XP Home on a homemade PIII 650. As for hardware and resource conflicts, none show and I have been using this same setup for many many months. It wasn't until the install of VV3 that any program showed a concern. I also use Premiere and Media Studio Pro with a Pinnacles DV500 plus editing board.
Another webboard suggested a complete, format your hard drive, install of the OS, but I think I will try your way first. I will uninstall VV3 first, reinstall OS (w/o format) and reinstall VV3. If that does not work... well unless SoFo replies I guess I will have to do a clean reinstall.
Thanks again,
Barry

Well, just tried a reinstall (not clean) of OS and it made no difference. Still get same message. Using v3.0a, but still happened with v3.0.
Wonder why SoFo has not replied to my requests?

Can you try uninstalling the Ulead product, then try re-installing Vegas? We did find one case where a Ulead demo was breaking Vegas, but our tests showed this was fixed in 3.0a. Could be another similar issue.

Please let us know what happens when you do this-

Glad to know you are there. I have several Ulead Products, maybe 6 or so. Do you want me to uninstall ALL of them or just the Media Studio Pro.
Thanks for answering.

I'm totally fishing here, but this sounds very much like a Ulead issue we saw a couple of months ago. I'd say remove the Ulead video editing apps first- then the other Ulead apps. Try reinstalling Vegas after each of these other apps is removed- if we can pinpoint the conflict, we'll work with Ulead (or whoever) on a fix.

I can't promise this will solve the problem, but it is the first time we've heard it, so some experimenting is called for.

Again, thanks for being there. What I will do now is remove VV3 and MSP 6.5. After running Norton Systemworks I will try installing VV3. If the problem persists I will then remove VV3 and then another Ulead program and continue the cycle. I should say though, that I have had VV3 running in the past with all the Ulead programs.
Again, thanks.

And if you backup your OS to an extra partition you've set up on either your C:, or any other drive, a re-install from a 7200rpm HD takes 5 minutes. And what a relief not having to live in fear of trashing your system everytime you do pretty much anything new on your computer. Cant tell you how many times I've had complete freeze-ups requiring a reinstall just from cruising the web.

Ok, I removed MSP and that did not help. Finally took GG's advice and did a clean install of Windows XP again. (Love having to call Microsoft each time!) That did clear up the problem and the audio filters are now 'registered' and showing. I have since loaded many Ulead programs and VV3 still works.
Thanks to all those who helped me out.
