Basic editing question

I think Pinnacle scorched my brain with its basic functions. I now have Pro 8 and the couple hundred page manual printed out. I shot a movie and I am now trying to edit it. I want to delete some footage. I thought I would use split and delete the scene. That worked fine but I had an empty space where I deleted. I try to remove the empty block by bringing the footage next to it back (dragging). The dragging just brought back the scene I deleted. What do I do to remove the empty block in my movie without bringing back the scene I deleted? Thanks.

Turning on ripple edits will help you a lot as it will close the gaps for you while you edit.

As for the dragging problem, make sure you drag inside the event, not on the event edge. As you have found out, dragging the edge extends the event rather than moving it.

Look in the manual for "post edit ripple." It allows you to choose when you want the material to ripple. Sometimes automatic ripple editing can mess you up when you have multiple tracks. Since it's automatic, you sometimes don't notice all the clips that move.

When you were dragging, you must have been dragging the EDGE of the scene. You needed to drag the whole scene by putting your mouse somewhere within the scene, not on the edge.

When the mouse pointer turns into a Box with a two way arrow across it, it means that you will be stretching out the video if you drag. That is in case you chop off a part of it and later want to put it back. You drag out the clip and it will begin putting back what you removed.

The mouse pointer has to look like an arrow to move the clip. Highlight it and drag it to where you want. Don't click on the edge of the clip. Go back along the clip a little bit first and click there then move it.

The correct term is 'event'. Not clip or scene.
