Basic render time question!

I have Vegas 7- why would it take longer to render in avi than in mpg2? Also, I rendered an 18 minute photo collage (about 160 pics, but almost all had brightness and contrast adjustment) in avi, and it was larger than 4 gig! (it rendered into 2 different files: a 3.99 gig and another small file). What do I need to do different? I am attempting to put 1200 slides on a dvd, and was going to render smaller portions in avi before making the whole thing (I was advised to do that on this forum - excellent idea) but if avi files are that large maybe I shouldn't go that route. If you can help I appreciate it!!!!

It sounds like the drive you're rendering to is formatted FAT32 which brings in the 4 Gb limit - it needs to be NTFS to avoid this.

Normal DV avi's use about 13 Gb per hour, so 18 mins should be just under 4 Gb.
If the 160 pics were large resolution this may slow things down as Vegas would need to do a lot of rescaling. The other main factor governing how long it takes is CPU speed.
