Batch Ingest

I know that SB cannot batch ingest clips from the camera. Has anyone tried using another editing program to batch ingest and then edit the clips using SB. Though I like SB as an editor I own Studio 8 which I never loaded on my computer. My desire is to log clips in Studio 8, batch ingest using Studio 8, and then move the clips to the media pool in SB. I plan on experimenting with this later this week but thought someone might have some insight into this process. Thanks, Al

By batch ingest from the camera, do you mean doing video capture from your DV camera onto a hard drive? If so, Movie Studio can do this, and it will do scene detection as well.

As far as using another editing program, I've used ULead Video Studio to do the capture (long story) and then successfully edited those files using Movie Studio. I just capture to .avi files, and from there use Movie Studio to preview the files, edit the file names, add to the media pool, etc.

As an aside, if you search "media pool" on this forum you'll see some interesting posts on how people go about organizing clips when lots of files are involved; look especially for posts by Chienworks.

... and if you mean you've already captured the files and want them all to show up in the media pool in one fell swoop, then I believe you can multi-select all of the files you want from within the media pool. Doing this on a large number of large files will take some time since Movie Studio will build some profile information about each of the files.

What I find is easier is to pick and choose inidividual files using the explorer view (a few tabs to the right of the media pool tab; it can sometimes get hidden over there on the right!) as I work through a project, rather than trying to grab everything at once.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like I may be able to use Studio 8 to capture my video and then ScreenBlast to edit like I am hoping. By batch digitize or batch capture I'm trying to do something I know was available in some editing programs, that is, while previewing the tape perform mark-ins and mark-outs that the capture program stores in memory and then later tell the capture program to go back and capture or digitize the clips and add to the harddrive.

I've used Scenalyzer to do batch captures and had no problems at all. Similarly, I've used MS' Vidcap and edited the captured video in EditStudio. I doubt that it matters at all which capture program you use - you're just transferring dv from tape to hd.

FYI, version 4.0 of the program added the ability to batch capture.

I used to be a Studio 8 user before seeing the light and coming over to Movie Studio 3. One of the items that seemed to keep popping up on the Studio 8 forums, is that it does not play well with others. Oh yeah, it is also sensistive to the hardware you have (e.g. motherboard, chipset, etc.). And be wary of the updates available for Studio 8, as some people have had success and some have experienced more problems than it appears to have fixed. Support and updates for Studio 8 are almost non-existent now as Pinnacle is pushing ahead with Studio 9.

If you have XP, then you may want to take a snapshot of your system before installing Studio 8. That way, if you do experience problems, you can simply restore the snapshot and not have to worry about uninstalling Studio 8, then using their RegClean program (which does not fully clean out the registry) and all of the other manual fixes you will need to make.

You should check out the Studio 8 forum to decide if that is the way you want to go.
