Before I pull the trigger...

I currently have Vegas 3.0 and Acid Pro 4.0.

If I upgrade to Vegas+DVD does that includes the Vegas Video 4.0 upgrade?

Can I render the 5.1 audio and video in Vegas 4.0 or Vegas+DVD and use them with a different DVD authoring program? DVDit, ReelDVD, Impression Pro.?

Can DVD-A except encoded assets? (MPG, AC3, etc)

Can DVD-A build a DVD image file to be burned with another program?

I've just been converting old home videos to DVD and after all the work getting the assets ready I like to use multiple DVD tools to produce different DVD's (hedging my bets).

I've used the 4.0 beta and the upgrade looks like a good value. But will go for the extra $150 bucks if I can use the encoded assets in different programs. Can I write the BIG check?

John,

"If I upgrade to Vegas+DVD does that includes the Vegas Video 4.0 upgrade?"

Yes. As an owner of Vegas 3 you entitled to upgrade to Vegas+DVDA for $299 until March 15. After March 15 the combined deal goes up $100 to $399. You should have received an email about this special limited time upgrade offer. If you choose not to go for DVD Architect, you can upgrade to Vegas 4 for $150 until March 15, after which the prices goes up $50 to $199.

I think the answer to all the rest of your questions is also "Yes" but I'm not sure, so you shouldn't take my word for that. Better let a SoFo person weigh in on them. I like your idea of "hedging your bets." DVD authoring programs differ widely in how versatile they are in letting you set up the DVD menuing structure, navigation, and file structure.

Yes I did receive the email for sofo. The $150 difference was VV4 to Vegas+DVD.

Vegas+DVD seems pretty simple to use, but the lack of multiple audio tracks and subtitles would make not make it my first DVD authoring choice.

However, being able to use the 5.1 encoder directly out of VV4 (to use with other programs) well worth the extra 150 bucks.

I'm also wondering if it would work with Acid Pro 4.0?

Purchasing Vegas + DVD gives you both Vegas 4 and DVD Architect 1

Only if those programs can use that format. I believe DVDit can only accept stereo AC3 files so 5.1 would not be acceptable.

Yes

Can DVD-A build a DVD image file to be burned with another program?

It can build the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders to be burned using any program.

and, yes, the AC3 encoder would also work with Acid.
