I have some white Default Text with a transparent background. I want to apply an effect (in this case, film flicker) to the text. But when I add the Event FX to do this it affects the entire view, background and all. How do I have the flicker (or any FX for that matter) only affect the text?
You have to use the text as a mask so that only the text is seen even though the entire event is being affected.
To do this:
1. Adding a video track above the text
2. Copy the text to the new video track and remove any FX
3. Make the original text track a child of the new track (use the Make Compositing Child button in the track header)
5. Change the Compositing Mode of the upper track to Multiply (Mask)
What this does is make the white text on the top track is acting as a mask and will only allow the lower tracks to show where it is white (which is the text letters). You may have to take anything else that’s on the original track with your text off because it composites the whole track. In other words, move both the original text and the new text mask to new tracks that you then composite together.
