Beginner W. Vegas. Need Audio Fx help

prejto wrote on 2/17/2015, 6:46 PM
I'm sorry for such an elementary question, but I seem to be stuck and I'm not easily finding the answer in help.

I have a simple stereo wav audio file recorded from an old LP. I have tried to use EspressFx Audio Restoration. I can add the Fx to the chain but no amount of adjusting allows me to hear the effect in real time. What do I need to do?

Many thanks!
Peter

If you are using V13 pro and "Audio Event FX" .. then just play the timeline to hear the effect. You can adjust the effect as the timeline plays. I've never used Audio Restoration. Seems like a very subtle effect.

I've not used the ExpressFX Audio Restoration plugin from within Vegas, but I just tried it and it seems to work just fine, both when applied at the track level, as well as at the event level.

The effect is not subtle, but you do have to adjust the noise floor before you'll hear the reduction in hiss. Try setting that all the way to the maximum (slide it to the right), and you should hear the audio get really dull.

If you are not hearing anything change, even after you try this, then perhaps you need to change the audio device:

Options --> Preferences --> Audio Device

What's this FX meant for? Restoring old vinyl records?

What's this FX meant for? Restoring old vinyl records? Yes. It was originally a separately-purchased add-on for Sound Forge. It removes vinyl clicks, and attempts to reduce surface hiss.

It was pretty good back when it was created, almost a dozen years ago, but is completely out-classed by modern restoration software, like iZotope RX4. If you are serious about doing restoration, use that instead.

Thanks all for the help! Unfortunately I still am having no luck with this at all. Everything is set up as seen in this link:

Moving any Fx slider max has no audible effect. Now, of course I can hear the sound file play so does that still indicate that I should modify settings under sound preferences? I am currently set up per default installation of Microsoft Sound Mapper.

Also, what is the function of the Fx 1 slider control (in photo set to -31.4 db)? If I advance it I start to get an echo effect but still do not hear any effect from the Fx.

Thanks and again sorry this is so basic.

Peter

EDIT: OK, I think I am getting somewhere. If I press the "solo" button in the Fx module and then advance the Fx 1 slider I can now hear the Fx effect. So, I take it that before when I advanced the Fx1 slider control I am hearing an echo effect because I am hearing both a combination of the original track + the Fx version (delayed). Sorry this leads to a hopefully final questions:

If I apply an Fx to a CD layout must I render the audio to incorporate the Fx or will Vegas do this on the fly while writing the CD?

THANKS!!

Don't insert it into the mixer. Instead, assign it to the track, or if you want it to affect everything, assign it to the Master part of the mixer. I tried to do what you did, and it didn't work for me either. I don't think that is a valid way to use Vegas, although someone else might have another thought.
