======

Hi - I encode in 480x360 for many of my avis from Vegas4, I'm finding that the render filesize for that size, uncompressed ends up being Larger than for a straight NTSC DV 720x480 render.

Using Huffy, I get a filesize that's still, for example 2Gigs in 480x360 huffy vs 1.3 gigs in 720x480 with the default render settings in vegas.

(I tried techsmith too, the 480x360 ended up being even larger, just over 3g).

Any suggestions on how to best render out footage from Vegas for 480x360? I then import it into FlashMX2004pro to render out w/sorenson for the final .flv.

Using both the avis, the final render flv is same filesize, 30megs, for 720x480 or 480x360, so that didn't help w/reducing flv filesize.

Appreciate any tips on getting a great 480x360 render from V4 that I can then render into flv via Mx... eg better codec.. as uncompressed doesn't seem to render proportionally, as I thought it would...

thx much,,

Hope that's clear, I'm just wanting to find out how to render a clip in Vegas4 using 480x360 custom size rather than 720x480, such that the avi for the smaller movie is smaller than one from the 720x480 size.

Using defaults doesn't seem to do it.

Uncompressed vs DV is no-where near the same. DV is compressed 5:1. Uncompressed is ... er... NOT (compressed that is)... so it should be no surprise to find that even though you are rendering to a smaller frame size that file sizes have not gone down "proportionally".

thanks.. that's what I was thinking.. but how can I get the DV codec to work in V4 for non-standard sizes? apparently it's used automatically for NTSC DV output renders... not sure what to choose re render settings for 480x360.. .

sorry for the newbie question, I can't find a working DV codec for non std in the drop down codec box.. appreciate the help.. !

DV has a fixed size of 720x480 (for NTSC). You can't use it for other size frames.

WMV encoding is pretty efficient and lets you choose custom sizes. That's what I'd go with.

thanks Chien, Laurence.. good to know.. agree re wmv is the best final-output format, other than .flv ...

for this project, I need to output a 480x360 .flv format file ... been trying a lot of variations, not much luck so far.. rendering all over the place from vegas, sorenson, flashmx.. can't get a good low filesize 480x360 rendered..

Best I can do so far is, a 720x480 .flv that's 6 minutes, 31 megs..

I'd like to get a 480x360 that's 6 mins, eg "a lot less" megs, like 20-24..
appreciate any thoughts.. have experimented w/diff VBR/CBR/ bitrate
encodings from sorenson and others.. same story..

Have you tried the SONY YUV codec? That's supposed to be about 1/2 to 1/4 the size of uncompressed.

thx, I'll try it! Also, I finally got flixpro to output the right way as well, it's looking good.. will try the YUV as well ... appreciate it..
