Best File Type for VP8

I am trying to make sure I import the best file type/format for editing within Vegas. I currently have footage coming from a Sony HDD cam. It gives me files with the mpg format, but I am having dificulties at times when a clip crashes the program.

I have seen some members here talk a little about the Veggie Toolkit by Peachrock, and I was wondering if I could use that to batch convert these mpg files into a more 'likeable' format for Vegas, obviously with the least amount of quality loss.

What are the preferred (best for editing) file formats for Video & pictures.

TIA

Ted

I have not tried the toolkit just yet, and can somebody tell me if you can also use this software to batch convert JPEG pics to PNG's

Best for video is AVI using a DV codec. This means not DivX, not Xvid, not MJPEG. (These have been known to work with some finagling, but they are not ideal for editing.) Some DV codecs include Huffyuv, Lagarith, Panasonic DV, Sony YUV (I think?).

Though you may want to do some digging to find out MPEG is crashing Vegas. Editing MPEG is slow and slightly unpredictable, but it shouldn't be crashing Vegas.

Best for pictures... I have the best luck with PNG. BMP probably works about as well, but it's a more limiting format. JPEG is usually okay, but its inherent compression can be a problem if you have a lot of them, especially if they're exceptionally large. You can also use PSD (Photoshop layered files), but be aware that Vegas will see them as flattened images. Try to avoid TIF if possible; there's a lot of overhead involved there 'cause Vegas needs to make a call out to Quicktime to handle them.
