My preference order is:

On2
Sorenson

Then a long way after that, Flash Pro

Anything after that will be inferior imho.

on2 has a very reasonable Flix standard for near $40 (doesn't do 2 pass) but it still is superior to most in my mind. I bought flix pro and have been very impressed.

by the way, how can I make my link above clickable like the gentleman up above? I did it in the past and now it's not working the same. could be some dead brain cells on my end.

As far as Flash codecs (I'm talking for someone like me on limited budget but wanting quality anyway :), I spent alot of time searching this forum and finally chose what was suggested above: On2's Standard Flix 8. Note that Adobe now uses On2 for its codece -- that says something right there.

As far as links and other forum mark-ups, see page below and scroll down to the Links, Images and Videos part: Links are simple: just put URL inside of: -- left-bracket, link equals, right bracket. You'll see what I mean there.

So how are guys encoding to get good results?

I currently render m2t files to Cineform avi and then use flix pro 512k broadband flv, 490 x 272 , framerate 30, key frame settings fixed 300, 2 pass, max bit rate 464, VP6 Quality best, sharpness 10, deinterlace, and sometimes I bump up brightness and contrast.

I tried dv widescreen last night and it looked ok. Whats' the best settings to render dv widescreen? I may have done it wrong. it looks ok but much softer than the Cineform /flash render.

WMV looks softer still. Again what is the best settings for a wmv render? datarate wise is 3 Mbs the max? Should I change the aspect ratio?

.mov looked about the same a wmv. a little blocky and washed out.

Please advise I am really up against a wall w/ On2 chopping my Cineform avi's RANDOMLY! ugh. I need a better more reliable way. The failures are killing my work flow. Please help!

Make sure you use the Flix Pro deinterlace feature with 1080i footage. You always want to make sure Flash is deinterlaced. Also, I'd use a two pass render for anything that isn't streaming. Remember that If you put it up on the Internet yourself, it's a progressive download, not streaming. If you haven't hired a streaming service, you're using progressive download and a two pass render will look better.
