Best HD render settings for web or media players?

I want to render some HD clips for a web page and/or downloadable for windows media player. What is the best format/template for this? Obviously the size of the clips are not going to end up being as large.

I know this is going to vary depending on download speeds, but what generally is the best compact HD format/setting?

Video is shot with a Canon XH-A1 (1440x1080).

I've found that H.264/AVC is the best format to use in general, but at the moment I"m not really happy with the offerings in Vegas for encoding to that format. The few HD renders I did do from Vegas, I used the Mainconcept MPEG-2 codec... though you'd end up with larger files using MPEG-2 rather than AVC. Now I typically render an uncompressed AVI from Vegas, then encode to AVC using TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress.

Youtube's new 720p HD (H.264 encoded, I think) videos get away with a bitrate of around 2000kbps, and they end up looking pretty good. The video I uploaded there looks pretty good, anyway; though not perfect, of course.
