I, like a lot of people it seems, have wedding video that was shot in low light...I tried to b/w effect to minimal success. What is the best method for improving low light video?
I tried the brightness from the media fx tab and it was so so...there must be a better way...
The best way is to light properly before you shoot. Trying to add brightness in post will almost always result in a grainy looking picture of far less quality than you originally shot at depending on just how dark the video is.
Low light is difficut to overcome. Its the opposite of a blown out image where everything is so bright there is no detail left to pull out of the image. In very low light trying to pull details out of the shadows will introduce artifacts that may be more objectionalbe then the darkness.
Following may help some, but too dark is simply too dark if you really mean almost no light at all.
User Color Curves and/or Color Corrector. Monitor the results with the video histogram. The results will be grainy, but will probably be much more pleasant to view than the original. You may be able to soften or remove some of the noise using some of the temporal or spatial filters in VirtualDub. To do this, first correct the exposure using the tools mentioned above (BillyBoy's tutorials provide excellent advice), render the results to a new AVI, and then use this AVI as the input to VirtualDub.
The median filter in Vegas will be ok. However, that filter takes an insane amount of time to render.... Virtualdub sounds good to me (it should have some decent filters that render relatively fast).
You can use the CC to increase gamma. The color curves do the same thing except you get more control.
