Best NAS drive for streaming HD files

Guys

Yes this isn't strictly anything related to Sony Vegas but can't think of another forum to put this on. I thought rather than rendering files and copying to media e.g. DVD or a blu ray it would be far better to store on a NAS drive and stream to the PS3 directly.

I'm sure many of you already do this and appreciate if you can share any recommendations you have. I render AVCHD files to playback on the PS3 captured on a CANON HF10.

Almost any NAS should be fine, take your pick. Also though consider your network, it can be the weakest link. Since switching to HP ProCurve GigE switches my network performance has dramatically improved. The HP switches are only slightly more expensive than the cheap units that were causing no end of grief.

I have been using a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ for a couple of years now as my video storage device. I frequently stream the videos (I'm shooting HDV and rendering back to HDV) from my ReadyNAS to my Sony PS3 with no problems.

As others have said, make sure you have a solid network (Mine's 100MB Ethernet with one switch between the ReadyNAS and the PS3 - but I will be moving to Gigabit Ethernet soon).

I have been very happy with the reliability and usability of the ReadyNAS box and Netgear seems to be regularly updating the firmware with patches and new features.

There are quite a few NAS boxes out there these days. Check out www.smallnetbuilder.com for some good reviews.

I had my eye on a QNAP drive e.g. QNAP 209 II although I do like features from the tiversity media server which transcodes media on the fly e.g. so I could store AVCHD files and then it convert them whilst viewing on my iTouch / iPhone. However it seems QNAP only supports twonkymedia which doesn't transcode

I also recommend you look into ReadyNAS. I have a ReadyNAS X6 (don't remember how long) and I use it to store HD in it. I never saw any problems with it. Soon I'll be replacing with the NVX (already ordered) which supports network teaming and iSCSI. So you may want to look into that one. And the best part of ReadyNAS, is that you can share the same folder to Windows,Mac or Linux. Best buy for me!
