Best Plugin For Glare

HaroldC wrote on 2/23/2014, 4:22 PM
I have a shaved head. While shooting video I'm getting quite a bit of glare on the top of my head. Unfortunately I'm not really in a position to do much to adjust the physical lighting so I need to fix the problem with a plugin.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to reducing or eliminating the glare as to a specific plugin or combination of plugins?

I'd start with Color Corrector and/or Color Curves. HSL and LAB can also come in handy. I've used combinations of all of the them in certain situation. If the glare is blown out, there is only so much you can do. Perhaps some powder before you shoot it?

+1 to Tom's suggestion about powder. I have some small powdered wipes (about 2" square) that I bought at Body Shop that I use if my talent (men and women) have a shiny spot on their face or head that I need to get rid of. Lightly dab it on and the spot goes away. They come in different shades so ask the clerk for their recommendation.

If you are by chance shooting with a DSLR or hybrid in MOV format, you might want to convert the footage outside of Vegas into a format that Vegas doesn't stretch the ranges of. Glare on a bald head on a Canon or Nikon DSLR is going to peak a little over levels of 235. On a Vegas timeline 235 will be stretched to 255 and any detail in the 235-255 range will be clipped. Same thing with my GH3 if I choose one of the higher bitrate MOV modes instead of my usual AVCHD. Detail in that bright spot on a bald head such as yours or mine in this case is just gone if you capture it in Canon, Nikon or Panasonic MOV and edit in Vegas.

What camera format is your footage?

+2 on powder. Specular highlights are usually "blown out" and you will not be able to "correct" in post. Using a very high end camera will eliminate some of the "blown out" but once it is you have to work hard in post to disguise the blown out area.

Matte theatrical makeup and zebras will tame it enough to work with in post.

Thanks for all the responses.

My camera shoots in AVCHD. It doesn't have the zebra feature though. Maybe one of these days I'll have a prosumer camera. But for now I'll have to get by with my Sony Handycam.

Looks like I'll have to look for some powder or makeup.

Your AVCHD levels will not be stretched in Vegas. No worries there. How soft is your light? Hard light accents glare and wrinkles. Even something as simple as bouncing light off a white ceiling rather than shining it directly on the talent can do wonders.
