If you only care about SD, then just export only in SD. If you care about HD, export in HD.

The question is " if the quality is the same", I would like to know, too.

I would venture to say the quality would be exactly the same although I've read other forums where people would swear they get better quality. I would say the final results is very subjective to each person.

Logically, standard def is standard def. If you shoot the original in DV AVI and convert to MPEG 2 or shoot the original in HD 1080i and convert to SD MPEG 2, I would think the results would still be the same.

However, there is one advantage to shooting in HD. At least, you have the HD footage if/when you decide to move up to Blueray burning.

You don't have to wait for Blue Ray burning. I edit my HD footage and record it back to HD DV tape. I then can use the camera to play back on my 62" HDTV. When I'm ready to move up to Blue Ray, at least my footage will already be edited and I will save back to the computer at that time.

Yes but .... "logic" doesn't always work ;-)

My "standard def" TV is years old, along with the DVD player that is hooked up to it .. yet .. I can tell when viewing a DVD of a series that was shot in HD that it "better" than normal.

How this relates to the subject at hand ... I don't know .. but using logic and 'common sense' does not always give us the "true" answer.
