Best Quality Rendering

I originally rendered to the Template "Uncompressed", which produced a large AVI file that was very clear, but very choppy motion. I then tried rendering with the template "NTSC DV" which produced a much smaller AVI file that was not choppy, ran very smoothly, but was grainy and lower quality.

I would appreciate any advice about how to set the "Make Movie" rendering settings so that I get the highest quality AVI file produced, without the choppy motion.

By the way, after making the AVI, I will encode it to MPEG-2 using TMPGEnc, and then author it using Ulead MovieFactory 2.

NTSC DV should be acceptable for almost all video material. If you're seeing that much grain and reduced quality then either your source video has way too many strong bleeding colors or you're being overly critical of the results. DV is the standard format used in most digital camcorders and the vast majority of the users are quite happy with it.

As far as the uncompressed being choppy, this is due to it's huge file size. Your computer probably can't get the bits off the drive fast enough for smooth realtime playback. This shouldn't be an issue for you at all though since rendering to MPEG-2 is not a realtime operation. The rendering process will simply take as much time as it needs to process each frame, then move on to the next frame. The resulting MPEG-2 file should play smoothly and in realtime since it will be much smaller than the uncompressed file.
