best rendering for TS files

Most of my sources are TS files from a Humax PVR. So far I have been using Mediacoder to convert to mpg choosing a bitrate close to the TS file value. But I find in VS Platinum after editing the file I have no control over the bitrate (I know I need Pro for this but too expensive!) and have to rely on DVDA to fit to disc. Now Ive read that it might be better to work with AVI files. So whats best? Starting with a TS file and ending up with a DVD from DVDA what is the best sequence of file conversion to get a DVD 4.7GB size?

converting to dv-avi is fast, but takes 13GB per hour video. DVDA will then rerender to optimum bitrate taking into account 'fit to disk'. So if you have enough free drive space, quality wise, this would be the best approach.

what about the first conversion from the original TS file? At the moment I am using mediacoder to convert from TS to mpg. Should I now use mediacoder to go from TS to AVI or stick with mpg and then get vegas to render to avi
