Are you using the "Best Full" setting? The Auto setting bases the picture size on the size of the preview window. Best most likely is sharper, but because it doesn't have enough pixels to display all the info it wants, it looks bad (kinda like in Photoshop when you take a nice picture at 1600x1200 and zoom out to 1/10th it's size.

I've noticed that sometimes you'll have to render. Make sure your track opacity sliders are set to 100%

I've noticed that when preview looks odd (once in a blue moon) I have to resize the preview window. I double click on the title bar and it toggles between 740x680 and 352xwhatever and preview will clear up. I usually have the preview window small as I use an external monitor connected via my dv cam.

The problem was due to the 24P Project setting on AVI's that Vegas didn't recognize as 24P video.

The video was shot with DVX100's and then dumped into Vegas using a pro JVC deck. I can see the pulldown in the video if I watch it frame by frame, but Vegas wants it to be a 29.97 Project.
