I just bought my self the Sony HDV-Z1U and thought that I should share my findings. I have only done a very short test so I don't know if it is accurate but it would be interesting to know if anyone else have the same experience.
I captured using Connect HD to m2t and avi files, loaded the resulting files in Vegas 6 and rendered/encoded as follows.
1. m2t -> microsoft 720*576 avi PAL DV 16:9 (tested both upper and lower fields first) -> Procoder 2 to PAL 16:9 DVD (upper and lower)
2. HDV avi -> microsoft 720*576 avi PAL DV 16:9 (tested both upper and lower fileds first -> Procoder 2 to PAL 16:9DVD (upper and lower)
3. HDV avi -> HDVIntermediate (upper field) -> Procoder 2 to PAL 16:9 DVD (upper filed).
For me rendering to HDVIntermediate and have Procoder do the downconversion to DVD gave the best result. In alternative 1 and 2 I got teething and jerkiness on a very quick move/pan with the camera when I changed from left to right view on a helicopter tour over Manhattan. In alternative 3 no teething/jerkiness was visible.
