Depends on how you like to learn, There are several training videos out there for vegas, but in my opininion the best way is to start with vegas movie studio figure that out , get comfortable with the program , edit some videos , and then upgrade to vegas , if you need to.

Thanks. I already have Vegas 5.0 !! My son uses it more than more but he's not a paitient tutor !!

I I like to learn by "seeing a result", then seeing how to achieve it. I learn very quickly that way.

Franc11s,
I'd recommend you do what you're doing by hanging out in these forums.
I'd also recommend you visit the VASST site where you'll find hundreds of tutorials and training files, plus lots of relevant articles.
http://www.vasst.com/login.htm

Then there are the training DVDs, I have several out, you'll see those on the VASST site. Gary Kleiner has a set of DVDs out that are very good, and Class on Demand has a set of DVDs out featuring myself, Tim Duncan, and Edward Troxel.

There are also books on Vegas, there is the Vegas5 Editing Workshop or

Two very different books, both with varied approaches to how to accomplish tasks in Vegas."Instant" is very task oriented without much explanation on why things work the way they do, and Workshop, which is more technical and explanatory.
Welcome to Vegas.

"Vegas 5 Editing Workshop" is an excellent and fast way to learn Vegas 5.

Holy moly Billy !
I didn't know you "revamped" your site. Very nice job !
Where the hell did you find the code to calculeat the visitor's screen resolution? Is it in Flash too? PHP?
I've been tossing Vegas on the side these last weeks because I'm trying to learn more about website building and I must admit I was positively surprised by your job on this "revamped" version... and it's so much more functionnal than the earlier version !
Cheers!

When I bought Vegas 4 last year I knew little about video editing. Reading manuals did not help me get started. When reading this forum I found somebody recommended the Tutorial for Vegas 3. I was able to find it on the sony site and downloaded it. The tutoring gave step by step instructions on how to create a short video using the samples. After going through it I was immediately able to produce my first video.

I do not have the link handy. If somebody has the link please post.

I got Spot's DVD training Vegas 5 Fasst and found it very useful especially on the audio aspect of Vegas. You might want to check that out. It may not cover as much as the book Vegas 5 Editing Workshop (just got that myself), but you'll see the result realtime and how to do certain stuff.

For me trial and error works.

I decide on something I want to do - HP Video with the picture freeze. Then check the forums to see if its been discussed. Then try it myself.

If I get it to work, I try to see if I can do it another way.

I often shoot things just to try different edit techniques.

Whenever anyone shows a video here on the site, I check it out. I will always see something that looks cool that I want to learn. I then study, try it.

As far as materials, others have given good suggestions. If you can get to a trade show and watch a Vegas demo or attend a mini class you can learn tons. I know that CES this January has a bunch of Vegas learning ops. Either thru the demo booths or via the training tracks.

I attended Spots' one day class when he was in town. Learned an amazing amount. I still refer back to my notes.

Hi - been using V5 since June this year - never edited at all before that. Bought Spot's Vegas 4 Edting workshop book and DVD set (much to my chagrin no V5 books/DVDs available at time of purchase and had to settle for V4 training since I had to be up and running asap) .
Living in Canada, with value of our dollar, various taxes, shipping and brokerage fees, it ended up costing a bundle. I say if you can get them for only $99, go for it!
A friend edits with Liquid Edition and Pinnacle has on their site dozens of FREE on-line tutorials and the occasional live webcast. I checked them out and they are fantastic. Hoping that Sony might do something like this, expecially for complete novices, but it's unlikely as they have the sales revenues to consider, but support of this nature would be highly appreciated by many, I'm sure.
This forum has been my primary source of info, however I find many answers use technical jargon and terms that are beyond my current level of knowledge and leave me feeling embarrassed to pose some questiosn myself - althought people responding have been nothing but superb and helpful when I do.
Have made several videos thus far (using Sony PD170) and I learn more each time. Learning by doing - over and over - and using my "practice video" is the way I learn best it seems. Even so, STILL have not been able to catch on to a simple picture-in-picture (going by the instructions too) so feeling very green yet!
good luck with learning Vegas - the books, DVDs are a good addition to this forum and handy for reference at any time. I don't care too much for the on-line manual, but I'm planning on getting that printed too so that it's also easier to refer to but have not gotten around to it. Just keep at it and it will eventually all come together a bit at a time.

hapning.

Here is a PIP veg file
www.z4owners.net/PIP.veg

Track 2 is the main track
Track 1 is the inserted
Uses track motion on track 1 to create the PIP
Anything placed on track 1 will show as the PIP. You can replace the generated media with your own. To play around. Enjoy.

This is one of many ways to create this.

If you click on the track motion control you can then move or resize the PIP.

It seems the Vegas video resources are "vast" and stupendous ! Eager to explore the various sites listed- and instructions on PIP also -thanks to you all.

I'm likely the only one on this forum who doesn't know who Edwards and Mike Jones are, right? But never mind, it looks like I'll have enough instructiional material to last a lifetime now.

thanks again!

I was introduced to vegas by Douglas Spotted Eagle's Vegas 4.0 Editing workshop. A great teacher and presentation. I also purchased the Editing Workshop book. I learned quicker by watching and doing but everyone has their own style.

Class on Demand has a bundle of the original Douglas Spotted Eagle Vegas 4.0 editing workshop and the Tim Duncan Edward Troxel Vegas 5.0 update for $129.95. They are also running a number of specials on make it yourself bundles. http://www.classondemand.net/holiday04/holiday04.htm

Good luck with Vegas.
