Best Way to Stage Project Setups? Template? Suggestion for Upgrade?

OK, Me and the boys get together and jam, and want to
capture things. I'm assuming setting up one project, then
recording the whole gig is a recipe for disaster and
frustration at best. If I know ahead of time what all the
track assignments will be, I'd like to have things pre-set.

My Solution:
1) I've created a project with all my track assignments
pre-set, but empty (we'll call this my 'template'.

2) I create a directory for the jam, say c:\my
vegas projects\jam20000518, and many subdirs under that for
each song (song01,song02,song03,...), and copy my template
into each.

3) At this point it seems, that in order to keep all the
track .wav's in the same directory as the song's project, I
need to go into each project template's properties window,
then change the default directory where .wav's will be
placed when done recording.

4) Come gig time, I open up a project template, select all
the tracks, arm for record and go! When the song ends, I
hit stop and all the .wav's get saved in a neat and tidy
arrangement, in the same folder as the project.

5) Now I've got a week to mix things before the next jam.

Q: if you are still with me... ;-)
Is there an easier/better way? How do you do it?

Suggestion: SF, you still with me?
Add a checkbox type option in the project's properties that
says "save all files in same folder as project."

FYI - I believe this has been improved in 2.0, yet I understand your
angst. In 2.0, it seems it will default the record-to folder to the
folder in which the project resides... Have you checked out the beta?

Charles,
I'd avoided the beta so far, as this whole setup is about 2 weeks old,
and didn't think I needed to introduce any more chance for error.
Plus, perhaps I was misled a bit by the title "Vegas Video".

I intend to be strictly audio for now, do you think the beta's
stability is ok? I guess there's always the issue of upward/downward
compatability between VP1.0, VV, and eventually VA.

Hmmm mebbe I'll have to grab that beta while @ work (no T3 at home.)

Hmmm. Well I guess I woudn't recommend using it if you don't know the
known bugs, etc. I've been using it since it came out and haven't
touched 1.0b for a while. It's pretty stable. A lot of nice new
features - envelope improvements and editing improvements as well as
some file management improvements.

For what you were talking about, I guess the way you're doing it now
is the best and only way.

Vegas Video is the same as Vegas Audio, except with more video
features. If you don't use them, they don't get in the way.

Good luck.
