Better Preview!!!!/ A/V sync trouble

Hi, how can i improve the preview in Vegas 4 when i set it to Best quality? I do not get a flowing result and the only way i can get a flowing picture is by setting the preview settings to the lowest setting. It is very difficult to view in this mode. I d not have a dedicated hardware card such as a Matrox or Canopus in my PC. Is that the reason why? My PC is P3 850 Mhz 512 ram Win XP. Do i need furthur hardware to help (also to speed up the rendering perhaps)
The other problem i am having is A/V sync. I have tried rendering a video clip that i captured from satellite which is saved as a PVA file (similar to Mpeg) but when i render to Mpeg 2 Pal DV Mainconcept i get sync trouble. The video is ahead of the sound. I checked the settings under custom settings in the rendering area and it looks like everything is being taken care of by itself in relation to syncing, but the result is not want i am expecting. I wish someone can help me further as it takes hours and hours of guess work to get it right otherwise...MONTHS!!! As far as i can see the original material is in sync.
Many thanks

Your problem is your PC. To get the performance you are looking for, you are going to need to upgrade to something more current (faster).

There are no separate hardware cards to accelerate Vegas performance.

I think that was an answer to Jascha's first question. Preview should be smooth at "Good" setting with a faster cpu. "Best" is unnecessary.

The Sync problem is something else again.
