Bi-directional Analog / Digital Video Converters

I'm looking for recommendations on a Bi-directional Analog / Digital Video Converter (USB 2.0, not firewire) that will work with Vegas 4.0e. I currently have the Dazzle DVC-150 which is not supported, so I have to use the old Dazzle software (Moviemaker 5.0) to capture.

I was thinking about the Canopus ADVC100 or ADVC300, but am not sure this will work with Vegas either.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

The Canopus products are 1394.

I think you'll be out of luck if you have to have a USB based converter.

Vegas, to the best of my knowledge, only supports 1394 (firewire) and not USB. You can purchase an inexpensive firewire card from the internet from a number of reputable dealers (we are talking easily under $50 shipped).

According to many past posts, firewire will not effect the video being transferred whereas USB will. Sometimes you have to go with the flow.

I don’t think Vegas supports USB devices. It supports IEEE1394. So unless you can find a product that makes a USB device look like a 1394 device, I don’t think you’ll find a solution. You will have to use whatever software that came with the USB device to capture and write to tape. I also don’t know of any that capture anything but MPEG files which are not optimal for editing without quality loss. IMHO, USB is NOT the way to go for quality video capture. My advice is to get a firewire based solution.

Fair enough - I just re-read the specs on the ADVC300 and it is 1394 (Firewire). I have noticed with my USB device that it is almost impossible to get D to A conversion without serious OOS issues, but the A to D is *OK* (although from reading here, I could get much better quality). I thought I saw a thread where there were problems with the ADVC100 though...

Anyway, assuming I get a firewire card, any recommendations on a good, but not too expensive bi-directional hardware device? I see a lot out there and don't want to waste any more money than I already have. I originally had the Dazzle DVC-150 with Dazzle software; it was bought by Pinnacle and their software doesn't work (serious OOS issues and poor support IMHO). However, at the time, it did cost about $200 for the device (although it's cheaper now, I'm sure), and then I bought Vegas which was a pretty serious investment. Now I'm just looking for some hardware that will work optimally with the Vegas software, without having to play hit and miss again :-\ Something that will be around for a while as well, not sold to another company that doesn't know what they are doing!

tia again, I'm new here and although I've created many successful projects with other software, the quality was not up to par with what I expected, hence the investment in Vegas.
