Just wanted to throw out a thanks and also offer the tip to others.

Billyboy,

There was some thread awhile back where you suggested using removable hard drive bays for security, organization and unlimited capacity potential. Well I was curious and ordered one just to check it out (and because their cheap!) and..........WOW! these things are really cool. I know they're not new or anything but I've feel like I just understood a joke someone told me a month ago. The storage space potential alone is a HUGE advantage. I mean, these things literally make storage potential unlimited. I could go get 100 different HDD if I felt the need. All you do is shut down, pull out the tray insert new HDD and push tray back in. Not to mention this makes my data organization much cleaner, and Data security is greatly increased.

Anyways, Thanks for the find. -Shon

You're welcome! Yep, I like them a lot. Something else you can do too if you really want to load up. Some of the documentation for Windows is a little murky so it seems to suggest you can only have 4 IDE devices per PC. Actually it is 4 IDE devices per interface card. So since I recently got one of those new 200GB IDE 133 drives that come with a interface card I loaded up my big full sized case with 4 extra drives, so I had 7 hard drives and one DVD burner all running in one system. I know... a bit much, but you can do it, with XP anyways. For the first time ever I had all my files on one PC, over 400 GB's worth of goodies at my finger tips. Anyhow I decided to just keep one smaller drive on the 2nd IDE card and now use that to capture to and to print to tape because I can defrag it much faster than one of my monster drives.

My 2 cents
I have an Asus board with an ATA-100 controller inboard giving me 2 more IDE ports. AND I have a Promise ATA-100 PCI card giving me 2 more IDE ports. In total, I have 2 ATA-66 and 4 ATA-100 IDE ports. On those I managed to install 10 Hard disks plus my DVD-ROM and CD/RW (on ATA-66 port #2). Megalomany anyone ?
Just don't forget to look at your Power Supply :-)) . I have 2*350Watt running along each other. One of them for 6 disks, the other for the motherboard and all the remaining stuff.

On a different (and more rational) approach ... have you tried Iomega ? They have those USB2 Jazz drives, I wonder how practical are they, portable and all ? Not me, anyway, my 100MB Zip Drive has long gone the way of obsolescence ...

SOmething the old Casablanca had was removable drives, so I fitted the sam on my PC, works a treat. Hve you thought of using firewire ext drives no need to power down then... You can also use them on laptops etc...

One step further. As the Win2000 platforms goes, your not restricted to the 26 - minus the dedicated letters - letters for drive id's.

I use three 120 Gig firewire drives in addition to my PC HDs. This way I can use my laptop and a firewire HD when giving presentations via an LCD projector...and I can edit on the road.
