Bitrate quick question

memory maker wrote on 5/12/2006, 4:04 PM
I am using vegas 5, mostly for photo compilations. I don't understand bitrate, and if I should just use the default setting or what. Most of these are 5-10 minutes in length. Sometimes even though they work on one of my dvd players they won't always play on the other. Could that be a bitrate issue? Anyone kind enough to answer this will be appreciated!

Most likely a media issue. Bitrate seldom causes an issue. Use top-quality media only. It is the single most important compatibility issue when making DVDs.

thank you....I seem to have better luck with dvds burned on my sony vaio desktop than my toshiba laptop. can the burner itself make a difference?

Yes, a burner can make a difference as well. I just changed burners because I had a sudden increase in coasters after purchasing my last burner. I haven't had one since I got the newest.

Yes, I agree with Dave, the burner can make a difference. They can start to degrade. Once they do, some things may still function. However, usually whatever is going wrong will go wrong consistently. It will also usually get worse over time, sometimes rapidly. CD and DVD drives go bad ten times more often than anything else. In twenty-five years of personal computers and multiple software companies, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of hard drives that have actually failed (I discount the ones I manager to screw up myself), but I think I've gone through 6-8 CD and DVD drives, all by myself, in just the past six years -- and I don't use them that much.

I've been luckier with CD/DVD burners, but I've still gone thorugh a half-dozen. One DVD burner I destroyed when my power supply failed (or maybe it was the other way around), and one CD burner was destroyed when a CD exploded (a surprisingly violent noise; there was a tiny crack at the hub of the CD).

The other swaps were for burn speed increases. It looks like now things in that department have stabilized.

Maybe NewEgg should sell DVD burners in 3-packs.

Although you probably said this in jest, I think it would be a great idea. That way you are sure you always have one ready when your current one dies in the middle of a project.
