bitrate settings

Hi guys i just finished a 1hour 50 min film took 5 hours to render which i thought was pretty good, the thing is tho i altered the bit rate settings, anticipating the 4.5 gb limit on dvd-r's. I dropped the 8000 down to 6500 and the average 6000 down to 4500 but on the subsequent dvd the quality is not quite good enough and also the final film size was a lot smaller than i thought. How can you alter the bit rates and know the final film size before you render and what figures would you use for maxium quality but with a way to get around 2 hours worth crammed onto a dvd-r .

I use vegas 5 but not architect i use meastro cos i want total control over the dvd format.

Use a bitrate calculator...I don't have links on my laptop, but do a google for bitrate calculator+DVD and you'll find dozens.
I think http://www.bitcalc.com gets you to one, don't remember though.

Yep, using a bitrate calculator is the best way to determine this. I use the bitrate calculator at videohelp.com and it shows that a 1hr:50min video on DVD5 media should be encoded at 5315.

Also I would not alter the max bitrate from 8000. Leave that alone so you can use that many bits if needed in a scene. Just alter the average bitrate and the encoder will make sure that the average is around what you set it. This will give you a better quality picture.
