Black frames render problem

I'm having problems getting VV3 to render a video from still image sequences to avi/DivX or mpg. Whenever I try now it works fine until frame 5-600 (never the same frame each time). But then it starts to render all black frames until it's finished (~1900 frames). This happens both with avi and mpg output, and probably others as well(?).
The stills are 640x480 png files generated from a 3D app (trueSpace).
The PC is an AThlon 1.33GHz with 512MB DDR RAM and a Radeon AIW card.
I'm running Win98SE/Norwegian.
I have reasonably fast IDE drives (7200rpm), but when rendering to a movie it shouldn't really be a problem anyway, as there is no need for VV3 to rush it so much that it drops frames, or whatever it is that causes it.

I complained earlier about problems with using avi/DivX for source media in VV3, and then I was told to always use single images instead. The problems I had with DivX was quite similar to the problems I now have with stills, ie black frames starting at a "random" frame.

Please send a project (.veg) file that exhibits this behavior to:

sonicepm@sonicfoundry.com

Vegas shouldn't be doing this obviously-

I did some more tests now, converting all the png files of the first section to jpgs. Now VV3 managed to handle them with no black frames. How can this be explained?
The last section is still png files, but the last part of it is overlaid with another sequence of alpha channel pngs.
I'll send the veg file to your address.
